Agewell 2023

  • By Lisa Fuller

The Midlands Arts Centre (MAC) in Birmingham came alive with excitement and curiosity as the Birmingham 1000 Elders Group gathered for a captivating public involvement scientific communication event, Agewell 2023. With over 150 attendees, the event was a resounding success and a testament to the community’s thirst for knowledge.

Agewell 2023, hosted on September 1, 2023, featured an impressive line-up of speakers who delved into various aspects of aging, neuroscience, and overall well-being. What made this event truly unique was that the topics of the talks were chosen by the elders themselves, ensuring that it catered directly to their interests and needs.

Professor Janet Lord, who has been a driving force behind Agewell 2023 for years, opened the event with a heartfelt welcome, setting the tone for an afternoon of discovery and learning. This year’s event holds special significance, as it will be Professor Lord’s final event in her role as the lead. She is retiring at the end of the year, leaving behind a remarkable legacy of scientific engagement with the community.

Professor Anna Whittaker took the stage to discuss the intricate interplay between social, mental, and physical well-being in the context of healthy aging. Her presentation provided valuable perspectives on leading a fulfilling life as we age.

Dr. Katrien Segaert explored the fascinating world of brain training apps, shedding light on their effectiveness. Attendees left with a better understanding of how these apps can impact cognitive health, a topic that resonated with many members who had expressed their interest.

Dr. Amy Naylor and Kathryn Frost teamed up to provide a comprehensive look at osteoporosis, empowering attendees with knowledge about bone health and the steps they can take to maintain strong bones throughout their lives.

In a thought-provoking session, Dr. Thomas Jackson unravelled the mysteries of delirium and dementia, offering clarity on distinguishing between these conditions and the importance of early diagnosis. Dr. Jackson, who has been an integral part of the event, will be taking over as the lead after Professor Lord’s retirement.

As Agewell 2023 drew to a close, attendees were filled with gratitude for the opportunity to engage with leading scientists and experts in the field of aging and neuroscience. The event’s success was a testament to the dedication of the Birmingham 1000 Elders Group in fostering scientific communication within the community.

Agewell 2023, the public involvement scientific communication event at the Midlands Arts Centre, was a resounding success, leaving attendees with a deeper understanding of key topics related to aging, mental health, and cognitive well-being. It demonstrated the bond between the scientific community and the public, fostering an environment where knowledge can flourish and enrich lives. As we bid farewell to Professor Janet Lord and welcome Dr. Thomas Jackson as the new lead, we celebrate the active participation of the Elders Group members in shaping Agewell 2023’s content, ensuring that it catered to their unique interests and needs.
