Cohorts

We place great focus on understanding the factors affecting the ageing trajectory, harnessing the power of existing cohorts and intervention studies such as:

20%

of the population consults their GP about a musculoskeletal problem each year.

We continue to gain significant value from deep phenotyped cohorts established in the first five years of the Centre, which include:

  • The 125 lifelong exercisers (master cyclists) cohort initiated in collaboration with Kings College, University of London
  • The Physical Activity and Healthy Ageing (PAHA) cohort of 200 healthy elders not meeting exercise guidelines (established at the University of Birmingham)
  • MRC COPD MAP cohorts from >200 muscle wasted and non-wasted patients
  • The BEACON very early arthritis cohort
  • Healthy young and old volunteers during chronic exercise training interventions and subsequent detraining
