CMAR Student shortlisted for the 2020 Max Perutz Writing Award

  • By Lisa Fuller

CMAR PhD student Jonathan Lewis has been shortlisted for the 2020 Max Perutz Science Writing Award, the MRC’s annual writing competition. Jonathan who is currently in his third year, wrote a piece titled ‘ To Infinity and Beyond: Finding Treatments for Space Travel Bone Loss ‘.

Applicants, who are all MRC PhD students, were asked to write and submit an article about research in their field, discuss why it matters, and do this in a format that would hold the interest of a non-scientific reader.

The overall winner of the Max Perutz Award, who will receive a £1,500 prize and have their article published in The Observer, will be announced at our virtual awards ceremony on 13 October 2020.

The organisers (MRC) received the highest number of entries ever this year, with 140 applicants, and the quality of the articles was extremely high.

Well done Jonathan!

Medical Research Council Versus Arthritis Centre for Musculoskeletal Ageing Research

We are funded by the Medical Research Council and Versus Arthritis, we are a Centre of Excellence in Musculoskeletal (MSK) Ageing Research. We are integrating and expanding complementary research and postgraduate training activity of the two leading Midlands based Universities, the University of Birmingham and the University of Nottingham, together with their associated NHS hospital trusts.

Versus Arthritis came to life in September 2018 as a result of the merger of two of UK’s largest arthritis charities – Arthritis Research UK and Arthritis Care
