Don Anderson, a member of the Birmingham 1000 Elders, celebrated his 100th birthday at the end of January. Centenarian Don celebrated his big day in style with a party for friends and family, and Professor Janet Lord went along to wish him well.
We are now accepting applications from enthusiastic and highly motivated individuals for 10 PhD studentships funded through the MRC-ARUK Centre for Musculoskeletal Ageing. These are fully funded 3-year studentships, beginning on 1st of October 2018.

Nima Gharahdaghi an international PhD student funded by the Vice Chancellor’s scholarship, at the University of Nottingham won 1st poster prize at the 10th Annual Congress of the Sarcopenia, Cachexia and Wasting Disorders Society held in Rome held on 8-10 December 2017.
The Young Life Scientists’ Symposium, an annual scientific conference, is organised by young life scientists, for young life scientists, and is an opportunity for scientists to showcase their work via oral and poster presentations, attend specialised workshops, and network in a positive and constructive environment. This year the symposium was organised by CMAR PhD students Jessica Cegielski, Colleen Deane, Joe Bass and Amelia Pollard.
CMAR member Dr Thomas Andrew Jackson, Clinician Scientist and Visiting Consultant in Geriatric Medicine in the Institute of Inflammation and Ageing, has been awarded the British Geriatrics Society (BGS) Rising Star Award for Research 2018. The competition was of a very high calibre however the votes for Dr Jackson were unanimous.

The 1st of October 2017 saw the start of Phase 2 of the Centre for Musculoskeletal Ageing Research, which is funded jointly by the Medical Research Council and Arthritis Research UK. The funding provides £2.3 million over the next five years.
This year we broke from tradition and went off-campus to Carrs Lane Conference Centre in Birmingham City Centre for our annual Agewell event.
