Cohorts
We place great focus on understanding the factors affecting the ageing trajectory, harnessing the power of existing cohorts and intervention studies such as:
- The Survey of Health, Ageing and Retirement in Europe, SHARE
- The LIFE study in the United States
- The Hertfordshire Ageing Study (Hertfordshire birth cohort),
- The Guangzhou Biobank Cohort Study (GBCS) – currently managed by the University of Birmingham
- UK Biobank
We continue to gain significant value from deep phenotyped cohorts established in the first five years of the Centre, which include:
- The 125 lifelong exercisers (master cyclists) cohort initiated in collaboration with Kings College, University of London
- The Physical Activity and Healthy Ageing (PAHA) cohort of 200 healthy elders not meeting exercise guidelines (established at the University of Birmingham)
- MRC COPD MAP cohorts from >200 muscle wasted and non-wasted patients
- The BEACON very early arthritis cohort
- Healthy young and old volunteers during chronic exercise training interventions and subsequent detraining
